Pet Accidents on Carpet: What to Do Right Away and How the Smell Really Leaves

Every pet owner knows the moment: a damp sock, or a smell you notice before you find the spot. What you do in the next few minutes decides how big the job gets. This is what I tell our own customers, including the plain truth about store sprays and what our treatment does that a spray can't.

The short version
  • Lift anything solid, then press a folded white towel into the spot and stand on it. Repeat with dry towels until almost nothing comes up.
  • Keep the water light and the heat away. Pouring water on it spreads urine deeper, and heat can set both the stain and the smell.
  • Store sprays mostly freshen the top of the carpet. Urine that soaked in keeps smelling after the perfume fades.
  • Our protein and enzyme treatment digests the urine down where it went, and a 100% pet odor removal guarantee stands behind it.
  • Point out every spot you've found when the technician arrives. If one smells again later, we re-treat it free.

The first few minutes

Speed beats any product under your sink. Urine starts sinking the moment it lands, down through the fibers and into the backing, and each minute it sits, more of it ends up where a towel can't follow.

Lift what's solid

Use a paper towel, or a plastic bag over your hand, and lift toward the middle of the mess so nothing gets pressed into the carpet.

Press, don't rub

Fold a white towel or a thick stack of paper towels, set it on the spot and put your weight on it. Shift to a dry section and press again until the towel comes up close to dry.

Rinse lightly

Dribble a little cool, plain water onto the spot and blot it back up. Twice is enough. A real pour of water carries the urine wider and deeper than it started.

Then leave it be

Let the spot air-dry, and resist the urge to scrub it or hurry it along with a hair dryer.

Vomit gets the same order of work: lift, press, a light rinse, press again. Move quickly with it, because what's in it can stain as well as smell.

Common fixes that make it worse

Heat is the worst offender. A hair dryer, an iron or a very hot rinse can bake the stain and the odor into the fiber, which is the opposite of what you want.

Cleaners that smell of ammonia come a close second. To your pet, ammonia can smell a lot like urine, and that can bring them straight back to the same spot to go again.

Then there's the rental machine. It pushes a lot of water into the carpet, and over an old accident that water can wake the urine back up and spread it sideways, so the room smells stronger once it dries. Go easy on bleach and oxygen stain boosters as well. They can strip dye out of the carpet along with the stain, and color that's gone doesn't come back.

Why store sprays only cover the smell

Most sprays on the shelf are made to make a spot smell better today. Plenty of them lean on fragrance, and even a well-made formula can only work as far down as it reaches. A light mist wets the top of the carpet, while the urine went through the fibers and into the backing below.

That's why the smell so often comes back a few days later. The perfume fades, the source underneath is still there, and your pet, whose nose is far sharper than yours, notices it first.

None of that means you did something wrong. A spray bottle simply can't reach the place where the problem sits.

How our protein and enzyme treatment works

Our professional treatment uses enzymes to break down the urine compounds that cause the smell, right where they soaked in. Once they're broken down, there's nothing left to give off odor. The smell is gone, where a spray would only have hidden it for a week or so.

Where it goes matters as much as what it is. Urine usually spreads wider under the surface than the mark you can see on top, so the technician treats the whole area it reached and gives the enzymes time to work before the room is cleaned.

After that, the room is cleaned with our usual low-moisture process, which lifts the loosened soil out and leaves nothing sticky behind to attract new dirt. Very little moisture goes in, so the room is dry in about an hour. Everything we use is non-toxic and safe for kids and pets, and your dog or cat can have the floor back that afternoon.

Our 100% pet odor removal guarantee

We stand behind the result. If you smell pet odor again in a spot we treated, call or text us and we'll come back and re-treat those areas at no charge.

The guarantee follows the spots we treat. A brand-new accident next month is a new spot, so tell us about it and we'll take care of it on its own visit.

It also sits on top of the promise behind all of our work. Every clean we do is satisfaction guaranteed: love it or it's free.

Stains and smells are two different problems

The odor treatment goes after the source. Many pet stains come out along with it or fade a great deal, but a spot that has been soaked again and again can change the color of the fiber itself, and no cleaning puts back color that's gone.

Your technician will tell you which spots look like that while you walk the rooms together at the start, before any price is approved. You'll know what to expect going in, and the odor guarantee applies either way.

Finding every spot before we start

The spots you know about are rarely all of them. Get down low and use your nose along the baseboards, behind the sofa, in closet doorways and in whatever corner your pet seems to favor. Make a list, faint ones included.

When the technician arrives, walk the rooms together and point out each spot. One that never gets pointed out can't be treated, and it will be the one you notice next month.

Helping your pet break the habit

Pets go back to places that smell like a bathroom to them. Taking the odor out completely is half the work of stopping a repeat. The other half is routine: more trips outside for a dog, or a cleaner litter box for a cat, can make a real difference.

For a while after treatment, set a chair or a laundry basket over the old spot, or keep the door to that room closed. It interrupts the habit while your pet gets used to the spot smelling like nothing at all.

When to call us

Call if a smell is still there once the spot has dried, or if your pet keeps going back to the same place. Pet treatment typically starts at $30 a room, and the minimum for a visit with pet treatment is $149; our pricing page has the rest.

Our pet odor treatment page covers the service in more depth. When you're ready, book through our online scheduler and someone from our office will confirm the time with you. You can also call 678-270-1555, a line we answer around the clock.

Pet stain and odor questions

How long can a pet accident sit before it's too late to treat the smell?

For the odor, it's almost never too late. Our protein and enzyme treatment works on accidents that are weeks or months old, and the 100% pet odor removal guarantee covers those spots the same as a fresh one. The stain is a different matter: the longer urine sits, the more likely it is to change the color of the fiber. Get to a new accident fast, and call us when a smell lingers.

My carpet smelled fine after I cleaned the spot. Why is the odor back a week later?

Because what got cleaned was the top. Urine soaks down through the fibers into the backing, and a spray or a scrub rarely follows it that far. Once the scent of your cleaner fades, the source underneath shows itself again. Our treatment is applied at the depth the urine reached and breaks it down at that level. That's what lets us put a guarantee on it: if the smell returns, we re-treat free.

Can you treat a pet accident on an area rug as well as on carpet?

Yes. We clean rugs where they sit in your house, on your own floor. Before treating one, the technician looks at what it's made of, which can be anything from a synthetic to hand-knotted wool. Urine often goes right through a rug to the floor underneath, so after an accident, lift the corner and blot that side as well if you can. The same satisfaction guarantee stands behind the result.

I can smell urine in the room but can't find the spot. What should I do?

Get low and follow your nose. Baseboards, corners, the area behind furniture and the edges of rugs are the usual places. Narrow it down as far as you can and mark each suspect area with a strip of painter's tape. When the technician arrives, you walk the room together and the treatment goes on every area you flagged. The more spots we know about, the better the result.

Do our dog and cat need to stay in another room while you work?

It helps. A curious pet underfoot slows the work down, and the treated carpet needs to dry before paws are back on it. Everything we use is non-toxic and safe for pets, and the room is dry in about an hour, so the wait is short. A closed door or a crate for that hour is plenty, and then your pets can have the floor back.

Satisfaction guaranteed on every visit.
