How Often Should You Have Your Carpet Cleaned?
The honest answer is that it depends on who lives in your house. Two homes with identical carpet can need very different schedules, because carpet gets dirty from feet, paws and spills, not from the calendar. Here's the rule of thumb we give customers around metro Atlanta, broken down by household, along with the signs that matter more than any date.
- For most homes, a professional clean about once a year keeps carpet in good shape.
- With young kids or a dog or cat at home, plan on every six months, at least for the busy rooms.
- Several pets, or a pet that's still learning, can mean the pet areas need us every three to four months.
- For rentals, clean at every turnover, and about once a year during a long lease.
- You don't have to clean the whole house every time. The busy rooms can run on a shorter schedule than the bedrooms.
Why there isn't one right number
Carpet doesn't get dirty on a timer. Soil builds up with the feet and paws that come in from outside, so a busy family room can need more care in four months than a guest room needs in two years.
How the carpet was last cleaned matters as well. Traditional steam cleaning can leave a sticky film behind, and that film catches new dirt quickly, so the carpet starts asking for another cleaning sooner than it should. With our low-moisture process there's no residue left in the fibers. The carpet resists fresh soil as a result, and it typically holds its clean look about three times longer.
Our rule of thumb, household by household
Treat this table as a starting point. "Busy areas" means the rooms and paths people use every day, like the family room, the main hallway and the stairs. "Quiet rooms" means bedrooms, offices and guest rooms.
| Your household | Busy areas | Quiet rooms |
|---|---|---|
| One or two adults, no pets | About once a year | Every 12 to 18 months |
| Young kids at home | Every 6 months | About once a year |
| One dog or cat | Every 6 months, with accidents treated as they happen | About once a year |
| Several pets, or a pet still learning | Pet areas every 3 to 4 months | Every 6 to 12 months |
| Frequent guests and gatherings | Every 6 months | About once a year |
| Rental property | At every turnover | At every turnover, and yearly in a long lease |
Adults only, no pets
A quiet household is the easy case. Once a year usually keeps the walkways from graying, and some homes can let the bedrooms go longer. The hallway is your best gauge: when it looks a shade darker than the rooms on either side, it's time.
Homes with young kids
Kids spend a lot of time on the floor, and they spill on it. Twice a year keeps up with the drips and crumbs in the family room, while a yearly clean usually covers their bedrooms. Everything we use is non-toxic and safe for kids and pets. Drying takes about an hour, so the floor is back in play the same afternoon.
Homes with a dog or cat
Pets bring in dirt on their paws, and their coats leave oils on the spots where they like to lie, which is why the carpet beside a dog's favorite corner darkens first. Every six months suits most homes with one pet.
Accidents are the part not to wait on. Urine sinks below the surface, and the longer it sits, the more stubborn the stain becomes, so call us when one happens. Our protein and enzyme treatment comes with a 100% pet odor removal guarantee, and our pet stain and odor guide covers what to do in the meantime.
Several pets, or a pet still learning
A house with several pets, or a new puppy, can need the pet areas cleaned every three to four months. That doesn't mean the whole house: clean the rooms the pets use most, and keep the rest on the regular schedule.
Homes that host often
Gatherings put a lot of feet on the same paths in a short time, and they come with spills. If you entertain regularly, every six months for the main rooms keeps the lanes from setting in. A clean before a big event makes the house look its best, and one afterward takes care of what got spilled; if you can only do one, after is usually the smarter choice.
Rental properties
For landlords and property managers, the simplest rule is a professional clean at every turnover, once the last tenant's belongings are out. Empty rooms are the easiest time to clean, and drying takes about an hour.
You also get an itemized invoice naming every room we cleaned, a clear record for your files. During a long lease, a yearly clean helps keep the carpet from wearing out before its time. Tenants who are moving out should check their lease for any cleaning requirement and book once the boxes are gone; our move-out carpet cleaning page has the details.

Signs it's time, whatever the calendar says
- The walkways look gray even right after you vacuum.
- The carpet feels flat or matted where people walk.
- You notice a smell when you get close to the floor.
- Spots are showing up faster than you can treat them.
- A spot you cleaned keeps reappearing.
Any one of these is a better signal than the date on your last invoice. If you're seeing two or more, the carpet is overdue.
Clean the busy rooms more often than the rest
You don't have to clean every room on the same schedule. The rooms people walk through every day carry most of the traffic, and keeping them on a shorter cycle than the bedrooms keeps the whole house looking right without paying for rooms that hardly get used.
Rooms are priced one at a time, so a visit for just the busy areas is easy to arrange. Prices start at $40 for a standard room, $20 for a hallway and $40 for each flight of stairs, with a $99 minimum per visit. Our pricing page lists everything else.
What waiting too long really costs
The real cost of waiting isn't the look. The grit in an overdue lane keeps grinding at the fibers, and once they're worn thin, no cleaning can bring them back. A lane cleaned while it's still only gray usually returns to match the rest of the room.
Odor works the same way. A pet accident treated in the first week is a small job, while one that has been soaking in for months has had time to spread.

Questions about cleaning schedules
Can carpet be professionally cleaned too often?
Not with a low-moisture clean. The worry comes from traditional steam cleaning, which can leave a little more residue behind each time, and that residue makes carpet soil faster. No residue is left in the fibers after our process, so cleaning more often does the carpet no harm. Still, there's no reason to pay for a room that doesn't need it yet; the signs in this guide are the best way to judge.
Is it better to have the carpet cleaned before guests come or after they leave?
If you can only do one, after is usually the better choice, because that's when the spills and the extra foot traffic are in the carpet. A clean before an event makes the house look its best, and since the carpet dries in about an hour, it doesn't get in the way of your preparations. If you host often, a regular six-month schedule covers both.
How often should a landlord have the carpet in a rental cleaned?
At every turnover, once the last tenant has moved out and before the next one moves in. Empty rooms let the technician reach every corner, and the carpet is dry in about an hour. During a long lease, a yearly clean helps keep the carpet from wearing out early. The invoice itemizes each room, so you have a tidy record for the property file.
Do we have to clean every room each time we book?
No. It often makes sense to keep the busy rooms, hallways and stairs on a shorter schedule and have the bedrooms done less often. Rooms are priced one at a time, so you're quoted only for the rooms you choose, and the technician puts that price in writing before starting. Tell us which rooms you want when you book.
If we vacuum more often, can we wait longer between professional cleans?
Yes, within reason. Regular, slow vacuuming pulls out the grit that grays traffic lanes and wears fibers down, so a well-vacuumed home can often stretch its schedule. What a vacuum can't remove is the oily soil that clings to fibers over time, and it does nothing for pet accidents. Our guide to care between cleanings has more on getting the most out of your vacuum.
